Pedestrian Safety and Bicycle Safety Audit Checklists

Purpose

The Pedestrian Safety and Bicycle Safety Audit Checklists are practitioner and consumer audit tools available from Austroads.

Method

These are observational audits with some desktop work for application at various stages from planning to construction as well as for existing infrastructure.

Brief description

The Pedestrian Safety Audit Checklist poses a list of questions for consideration during a pedestrian safety audit of a particular route or location. It contains both general questions as well as more specific questions addressing the needs of the elderly and young people, intoxicated pedestrians and people with disabilities. It is contained in the Austroads’ Guide to Traffic Engineering Practice (Part 13: Pedestrians)

The Bicycle Safety Audit Checklist contains quite an extensive list of possible questions for consideration during a bicycle safety audit of a particular location or route. It contains both general questions and as well as more specific questions relating to roads and paths e.g. alignment and cross-section, riding surface, signs and lighting. It is contained within the Austroads’ Guide to Traffic Engineering Practice (Part 14: Bicycles).
