Bikeability Checklist for Local Government

Purpose

The Bikeability Checklist for Local Government is a practitioner and consumer audit tool. It has been designed for use by local and state government planners, developers and community members to assist in identifying opportunities and barriers to creating physical environments that encourage cycling at the neighbourhood level.

Method

This is primarily a desktop audit, although observation may be appropriate for the route based version (see brief description below).

Brief description

This tool was developed by the Bicycle Federation of Australia on behalf of the Australian Bicycle Council. It consists of three checklists:

  • A brief version which captures a “snapshot” of bikeability in the local area;
  • A route-based version which analyses a particular route, section of road, path and so on; and
  • A detailed version for a more in-depth assessment of bikeability in a local area.

Each checklist contains a different grouping of items but in general cover the following issues to varying degrees of depth:

  • Strategic planning issues e.g. does the local government area have a bicycle strategy or plan? Is bicycle planning integrated into major developments?
  • Networking issues e.g. routes linking to major trip origins and destinations, signage and information, provision of bicycle facilities at bus and rail stations/interchanges and maintenance.
  • Comfort and aesthetic issues and considerations.
  • Safety issues and considerations.
