Mission & Main Functions

NSW CPAH will build on its work completed at the University of Sydney to support the NSW Department of Health in its role in advancing the promotion of physical activity by providing best quality information, strategy development support and contributing to workforce development.

NSW CPAH is kindly supported by funding from the NSW Department of Health.

The main functions of NSW CPAH are:

  • Physical activity information.
To improve access for decision makers (senior-level to practitioner level) to best quality information about the physical activity situation in NSW, relevant to state-wide and Area Health Service priorities.
  • Evidence-based planning.
To assist in the development of an integrated, strategic, evidence-based approach to physical activity at State and Area Health Service levels, coordinated with and complementary to national policies.
  • Workforce development.
To contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills of the NSW Public Health workforce to improve use of information for decision-making, policy formulation, and practice relating to physical activity promotion.
  • Applied research and evaluation.
To identify priorities for and contribute to applied research and evaluation projects that will improve knowledge and decision making about better practice in physical activity promotion.
  • Marketing and communication.
To communicate the purpose and role as well as marketing the products and services of the Centre to target audiences and raise the profile of physical activity issues within the NSW health system, Health networks and other health professionals.

In addition to NSW CPAH’s 3 year work plan, there will also be collaborative initiatives with other groups, researching ways of getting Australians to become more active.
